By subscribing to a forum, you'll receive an email notification any time a new topic is posted in that forum. If you want to receive notifications of any followup posts to the topic, you should subscribe to the topic.
I'd say the only thing that makes subscribing a pain in the butt is that it requires an email confirmation with each subscription. I know in other forums (like ADVrider) there are alerts and alternate ways of subscribing. Anyway thanks for the tip, I've just subscribed to new topics in the general forum.
I turned off email confirmation for subscriptions. Now simply clicking the Subscribe button is all that's required.
